The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC) will host a special exhibition ‘Pachappa Camp: The First Koreatown in the United States’ from June 7 to July 5 at the KCCoC’s gallery. This exhibition is curated by the Young Oak Kim Center for Korean American Studies at UC Riverside (directed by Professor Edward T. Chang) and is part of a U.S. traveling exhibition project generously supported by the Mellon Foundation.

 

The exhibition originally showcased at the UCR Arts Center from October 2021 to February 2022. Following its showcases in San Francisco (June 2024), Washington, D.C. (October 2024), New Jersey (January 2025), and New York (April 2025), Chicago will serve as the fifth host city.

 

Pachappa Camp, founded around 1905 by Korean community leader Dosan Ahn Chang Ho in Riverside, CA, was the first Korean settlement in the United States. Koreans flocked to the citrus rich city of Riverside where jobs were plentiful and Pachappa Camp flourished from 1905-1913, and existed until 1918. The settlement was home to about 300 Koreans at its height.

 

KCCoC will host an opening reception on Saturday, June 14 at 2:00 PM in BISCO Hall. The event will feature a special lecture by Professor Edward T. Chang on ‘The History and Significance of Pachappa Camp.’ This exhibition will serve as a valuable platform for cultural exchange, not only within the Korean American community but also with the broader American public, by highlighting the history and contributions of early Korean immigrants.

 

시카고한인문화원(이하 문화원, kccoc.org)은 오는 6월 7일부터 7월 5일까지 한 달간, 특별 전시 ‘파차파 캠프: 미국 최초의 코리아타운 (Pachappa Camp: The First Koreatown in the United States)’을 문화원 갤러리에서 개최한다. 본 전시는 UC리버사이드(UCR) 산하 김영옥 재미동포연구소(소장 장태한 교수)에서 기획하고, 멜론 재단(Mellon Foundation)의 후원으로 진행되는 미주 순회전시 프로젝트로, 샌프란시스코 (2024년 6월)–워싱턴DC (10월)–뉴저지(2025년 1월)–뉴욕 (4월)에 이어 시카고가 다섯 번째 전시 도시가 된다.

 

파차파 캠프는 1905년경, 독립운동가 도산 안창호 선생이 캘리포니아 리버사이드 (Riverside)에 조성한 한인 집단 정착지로, 미국 내 최초의 코리아타운이자 가족 단위로 이민자들이 공동체를 형성한 대표적인 사례다. 당시 리버사이드는 감귤 농사가 번창하며 일자리가 풍부했던 도시로, 많은 한인들이 이곳에 모여 1913년까지 번영을 누렸다. 전성기에는 약 300명의 한인 이민자들이 20여 채의 가옥을 중심으로 생활했고, 1918년까지 존속되었다.

 

장태한 교수는 저서 『파차파 캠프: 미국 최초의 한인타운』에서 “이곳은 도산 안창호 선생이 초기 독립운동을 준비하던 정치적·문화적 거점이었으며, 미주 한인 공동체의 상징적인 시작점”이라고 설명했다. 리버사이드 시는 2017년, 파차파 캠프를 공식 문화사적지 (Cultural Heritage Landmark)로 지정하며 현장에 “100여 명의 한인이 모여 20채의 가옥으로 형성한 역사적 판자촌”이라는 설명을 담은 기념 현판도 설치한 바 있다.

 

이번 전시는 파차파 캠프의 역사와 유산을 조명하며, 당시 촬영된 희귀 사진 자료, 지도, 신문 기사, 광고, 유물 등을 통해 당시 한인 이민자들의 삶과 공동체 형성 과정을 생생하게 전달한다. 특히 전시는 도산 안창호 선생의 삶과 미국 내 활동, 그리고 1926년 볼셰비키 혐의로 인한 강제 추방 사건 등 미주 이민자들이 겪었던 역사적 현실을 함께 성찰하는 자리를 제공한다.

 

문화원은 전시 기간 중인 6월 14일(토) 오후 2시, 문화원 비스코홀 (BISCO Hall)에서 전시 오프닝 리셉션을 개최하며, 장태한 교수를 초청해 ‘파차파 캠프의 역사와 의의’에 대한 특별 강연도 함께 진행할 예정이다. 본 전시는 한인 커뮤니티는 물론, 미국 주류사회에도 한인 이민자들의 역사와 기여를 알리는 귀중한 문화 교류의 장이 될 것이다.
