인디애나 음악대학 방문교수로 체류중인 작곡가 정승재 교수와 피아니스트 정선인 부부가 시카고한인문화회관 초청으로 2월9일 목요일 오전 11시에 2023년 첫 모짜르트 음악회의 문을 엽니다. 부부음악가가 함께 살아오면서 경험해온 일상의 소박한 소재들이 음악작품으로 탄생하기까지의 진솔한 이야기를 정승재 작곡가로부터 직접 들을 수 있으며, 각 작품에 스며들어 있는 한국 전통의 소리를 작곡가의 아내인 정선인 피아니스트의 연주로 감상할 수 있는 특별한 음악회입니다.

Known for his musical idioms that reflect a blending of tradition and the contemporary, Seung Jae Chung is a composer whose music is rooted in the idea of repetition and transformation. His recent interests involve the Korean local folk songs that reflect ordinary people’s daily lives.

A number of his works have appeared at Gaudeamus Music Week, Asahi Art Festival, Randspiel Festival, Intersonanzen Musik Festival, Asian Composers League Music Festival (Israel, New Zealand, Taiwan, and Singapore), and ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) World Music Days (Croatia and Hong Kong). Additionally, he has received commissions from Tongyeong International Music Festival, TIMF Ensemble, Vocal Ensemble for Contemporary Music, Korean Piano Duo Association, Ensemble Soriul, the Japan Federation of Composers, and so on.

Seung Jae Chung received a bachelor’s degree at Seoul National University and a master’s and doctoral degree at the Manhattan School of Music. He studied conducting with David Gilbert; electronic music with Pierre Charvet; and composition with Chung-Gil Kim, Giampaolo Bracali, Nils Vigeland, and Richard Danielpour. Currently, Chung is a visiting scholar at Indiana University and a music department professor at Sangmyung University in Korea. He also serves as the president of ACL-Korea and an executive board member of the Korean Composers Association and Korean Music Association.

한국의 전통적 요소를 현대적 해석을 통해 소리로 구현하는데 주력하고 있는 작곡가 정승재는 서울대학교 작곡과를 거쳐 맨하탄 음대에서 석/박사 학위를 받았다. 네덜란드의 저명한 가우데아무스 음악제에서 작품이 선정된 이후 다양한 현대음악제에서 작품이 연주되어 왔으며, 근래에는 한국의 토속민요를 기반으로 한 작품 활동에 몰두하고 있다. (사)ACL-Korea (한국아시아작곡가연맹)의 이사장과 (사)한국작곡가협회 부이사장으로서 한국 창작음악계를 위해 일해 왔으며, 2022년 가을학기부터 인디애나 대학교의 방문교수로 체류 중이다.

Pianist Sun In Chung from South Korea is one of the representative pianists in Korea who devoted herself to performing contemporary repertoire.  In addition to the Korean premiere of the piano concerto “Slow Frieze” by Birtwhistle in 2009 her appearances in the contemporary music scene include the Arko Art Fair in Spain, the Beijing Contemporary Music Festival, Hungarian Musicarama Music Festival, Thailand Festival, Klara Music Festival in Brussels, Seoul National University’s Contemporary Music Series Studio 2021, Isang Yun’s 10th Anniversary Concert, Pan Music Festival Solo Exhibition, Messiaen’s 100th Anniversary Concert presented by Naju Culture and Arts Center, etc.

Chung has performed recitals at major concert halls in Korea, such as the Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall, Sejong Chamber Hall, Ilshin Hall and so on. She also has received many performance invitations from the Seoul Budapest Exchange Concert, the Mendelssohn House Concert, the Schumann Project Chamber Music, and the Stockhausen Memorial Concert. In 2007, she was selected as a young artist by the Arts Council Korea.

She studied at Seoul National University, Berlin University of the Arts, and the National University of Music in Leipzig. She taught at Seoul National University, Konkuk University, Dongdeok Women’s University, Gachon University and is a member of Ensemble TIMF which is the leading contemporary music ensemble in South Korea honoring composer Isang Yun.

피아니스트 정선인은 예원, 서울예고, 서울대학교 음악대학을 졸업한 후 독일 베를린 국립예술대학에서 디플롬을, 라이프치히 국립음대에서 현대음악연주로 전문연주자과정 학위를 받았다. 귀국 후 한국문화예술위원회의 신진예술가 지원사업 음악가로 선정되어 활동하였으며, 한국을 대표하는 현대음악 연주단체이자 통영국제음악제의 상주단체인 팀프(TIMF) 앙상블의 정단원으로 활동해 오는 등 현대음악 전문 피아니스트로서의 특별한 행보를 이어가고 있다.
