Politics is completed by speaking. Politicians are remembered by the words that come out of their mouths. Those words become a message, which sometimes provokes enthusiastic reactions from supporters, and at the same time causes them to be hated by those who oppose them. Does the message really reveal the purpose of the messenger or hide the intention of the messenger and leave only the rhetoric with a clear purpose?

Camouflage is an etymological French word meaning disguise, deceit, trick. It is a pattern designed for soldiers to hide themselves from the enemy during battle. It is also used in the meaning of military pattern, and in modern times, it has been expanded to aesthetics and used in various fields such as fashion. It is contradictory and truly exquisite that a pattern created to disguise, change, and deceive one’s appearance in order to defeat the enemy or not be attacked by the enemy passes into the realm of fashion and is loved by people.

Message camouflage is a work that graphically interprets and expresses the symbolism of politicians and politicians’ messages, both supported and criticized at the same time by expressing the portraits and messages of politicians in camouflage patterns. The purpose of this study is to explore the aesthetic and formative nature of the process and principles that are conveyed as graphics or that graphics operate as messages.

This project is produced in a series and was printed on Silk Twill Fabrics used as a scarf material to function as a fabric poster and to be used as a real fashion accessory as well.

정치는 말로 하는 것이라고 한다. 정치인은 그들의 입에서 나온 말로 영원히 기억된다. 그 말은 메시지가 되어 때로는 지지자의 열광적인 반응을 불러오기도 하고 동시에 반대하는 사람들에게 미움과 증오를 받는 이유가 되기도 한다. 과연 메시지(Message)는 메신저(Messenger)의 의도를 드러내고 있는 것일까? 아니면 메신저의 의도는 감추고 명확한 목적을 가진 레토릭만을 남기는 것일까?

카무플라주(Camouflage)는 프랑스어가 어원으로 위장, 기만, 속임이란 뜻을 내포한다. 군인들이 전쟁 시 적군으로부터 위장을 하기 위해 고안되었던 패턴으로 밀리터리 패턴의 의미로도 사용되고 있고, 현대에 이르러 미학적 측면으로 확장되어 패션 등 다양한 분야에 활용된다. 적을 무너뜨리기 위해, 또는 적에게 공격받지 않기 위해 자신의 모습을 감추고, 바꾸고, 속이기 위해 만들어진 패턴이 패션의 영역으로 넘어와서 사람들의 사랑을 받는다는 것은 참으로 모순적이면서 또한 참으로 절묘하다.

메시지 카무플라주(Message Camouflage)는 정치인의 포트레이트와 메시지를 카무플라주 패턴으로 표현함으로써 지지와 비난을 동시에 받는 정치인과 정치인의 메시지가 가지는 상징성을 그래픽적으로 해석하고 표현하는 작업으로써 그림과 글의 시각적 경계에 대한 실험을 통해 메시지가 그래픽으로 전달되거나 그래픽이 메시지로 작동하는 과정과 원리에 대한 심미적, 조형적 탐색을 목적으로 한다.

 

본 작업은 연작으로 작업되었으며 스카프 소재로 쓰이는 투일 실크에 인쇄되어 패브릭 포스터로 기능함과 동시에 실제 패션 소품으로 활용될 수 있도록 만들어졌다.
