‘조선의 지도’ 문화원 박물관 특별전

 

During the late Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), cartography and the production of maps in general became widespread in Korea. Many presentation formats were created at that time, including those found in this exhibition: screens, rubbings, sheet maps, and atlases in various sizes.

 

The exhibition presents 12 Joseon Dynasty maps on loan from the MacLean Collection Asian Art Museum and Map Library in Lake Forest, Illinois, curated by Dr. Pegg, Asian Art Director of the collection. The MacLean Collection is a private institution specializing in Asian art and cartographic materials, operating as both a private collection and a research-oriented exhibition space.

 

Highlights include the Daedongyeojido (Great Map of the East Land), 19th-century maps of Seoul, a late Joseon national map, and astronomical works such as the 1395 Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido, a celestial chart created during King Taejo’s reign. These rare materials offer a unique opportunity to view historical maps rarely accessible to the public.

 

 

조선 후기(1392–1910)에 이르러 한국에서는 지도 제작과 지도 전반의 생산이 크게 확산되었다. 이 시기에는 본 전시에서 볼 수 있듯이 병풍, 탁본, 낱장 지도, 그리고 다양한 크기의 지도첩 등여러 가지 형식으로 제작되었다.

 

이번 전시는 맥클린 콜렉션 아시아 미술관 및 지도 도서관 (MacLean Collection Asian Art Museum and Map Library, 일리노이 Lake Forest 소재)이 소장하고 있는 조선시대 지도 12점을 문화원 박물관에서 선보이는 자리로, 아시아 미술 디렉터이자 큐레이터인 페그 박사가 기획하였다. 맥클린 콜렉션은 아시아 미술과 지도 자료를 전문적으로 수집·보존하는 사립 기관으로, 개인 소장을 기반으로 하면서도 학술적 연구와 전시 기능을 병행하고 있는 것이 특징이다.

 

이번 전시에는 ‘대동여지도’를 비롯해 1800년대 서울 지도, 19세기 조선 전도, 조선 팔도 지도 등 다양한 지도 자료가 포함되어 있으며, 1395년 태조 시기에 제작된 천문도인 ‘천상열차분야지도’ 등 천문·우주관을 보여주는 유물도 함께 전시되어 학술적 가치가 높은 자료들을 한자리에서 조망할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 이를 통해 지금까지 일반인들이 쉽게 접하기 어려웠던 희귀 지도들을 한자리에서 만나볼 수 있다.
