“ArtOneSpace is proud to present Korea’s most beloved tradition of folk art: minhwa, “the people’s art.”  Witty, diverse, and boisterous but also surprisingly complex, minhwa dates from the 17th century and features a large range of motifs inspired by nature’s wonders. They emphasise wit and humour over pomp and seriousness to create an art faithful to the stories and symbols of Korean life.

Created with ink and coloured powders on mulberry paper, minhwa paintings are extraordinarily diverse. They range from birds, flowers, water, insects, dragons and mythical figures, rocks, and more. They are thought to provide their owners with blessings like a long and healthy life, the company of loved ones and friends, or prosperity and success.

The animals depicted in the art poke fun at formality and rigidity, expressing love, laughter, and freedom and transferring those beautiful blessings to people.

Minhwa is in the spotlight as one of the richest, most fascinating sub-genres of folk art in Korea.”
