The KCCoC celebrated the traditional Hangawi holiday on September 30th with an event titled “Hangawi & Kimchi.” During this event, attendees, including families and friends, gathered at the KCCoC to make traditional kimchi and participate in various cultural activities.

Kimchi, Korea’s iconic dish beloved worldwide, is now readily available in Chicago’s markets. The KCCoC’s culinary team, especially for this Hangawi, conducted a pre-event demonstration of kimchi preparation. They completed the entire process of making kimchi, from mixing vegetables with seasoning to burying the kimchi jars in the ground. WTTW, a local broadcasting station, also visited the cultural center to cover the kimchi-making process and the Hangawi event.

In the main event, participants and volunteers gathered to pack their own kimchi, displaying a mix of respect and joy. Subsequently, they enjoyed traditional games and hat-wearing experiences in the gallery and museum. They also engaged in lively activities, including traditional percussion performances from the Poongmul School and a dance of “Gang-gang-sullae” (a traditional Korean performance) in the KCCoC Garden, all while savoring a delightful autumn day.

 

시카고한인문화회관에서 민속 대명절 추석을 맞이하여 지난 9월 30일, 토요일에 ‘한가위 & 김치’ 행사를 열었다. 이번 행사에서는 가족, 친구들과 문화회관을 찾은 참가들이 명절 김치를 만들고, 함께 즐길 수 있는 민속놀이들을 해보았다.
전 세계인이 사랑하는 한국의 대표 음식인 김치는 이제는 시카고에서도 어느 마트에서나 찾아볼 수 있다. 그래서 문화회관은 특히 이번 한가위에는 사전 행사로 김장 담그기 시연을 하여, WTTW 방송국에서도 김장 담그는 과정과 한가위 행사를 취재하기 위해 문화회관을 찾았다. 절임 배추에 무채를 버무려 넣어서 김치를 완성한 후, 김치 독을 땅에 묻고 김치를 넣는 전 과정을 마쳤다. 이어 이어진 한가위 행사에서는 전 참가자들과 봉사자들이 각자의 김치를 담궈 보았는데, 모두들 진지하고도 즐거운 모습이었다.

이어 갤러리와 박물관에서 전통놀이와 모자 체험을 해보고, 마당에서 문화회관 풍물학교의 길놀이를 시작으로 다 함께 강강술래도 해보며 흥겨운 시간속에 청명한 가을날을 만끽하는 시간도 가졌다.
