The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC) held the 12^th annual benefit gala with the theme “Hope to the New Future” to raise funds for the construction of “Bisco Hall.” More than 300 guests and supporters attended the event, which began with a welcoming speech by Gala committee lead, Byoung Sug Kim followed by a congratulatory performance by Gayageum artist Eun sun Jung. The event continued with congratulatory remarks by Kimberly Chunghee Kang, chairman of KCCoC, Julie Eunju Choi, President of the Korean American Association of Chicago, and Village of Wheeling president, Mr. Patrick Horcher. KCCoC president Dr. Yoon Tae Kim revealed that the 400-seat Bisco Hall will grow its pride by leaping toward a new future, with the goal of completion by the end of December 2023.

The celebration performance, the “Gugak Ensemble” received a great response for its harmonious performance of Korean and Western instruments with pansori musicians and tenor vocalists. Then, KCCoC Director Kay Kihwa Rho made announcement of plans for the 2023 year-round planning, programs and events.

시카고한인문화회관이 지난 12월 15일, 목요일 오후 5시에 윌링에 소재한 체비 체이스 컨트리클럽 (Chevy Chase Country Club)에서 ‘Hope to the New Future’라는 주제로 연례 후원의 밤 행사를 개회했다.

360만 달러 프로젝트인 ‘비스코 홀’을 건립기금 마련을 위한 이날 행사엔 300여명의 귀빈 및 후원자들이 참석한 가운데, 김병석 준비위원장의 환영사로 시작하여 정은선 가야금 연주자의 축하공연 후, 강정희 문화회관 이사장, 최은주 한인회장, 패트릭 호커 윌링 시장의 축사가 이어졌다. 이날 강정희 이사장은 류 헤리티지 재단 (Ryu Heritage Foundation)이 최근 일리노이 주 길만 카운티 농지 102 에이커와 현금 7만 1천 달러를 문화회관에 전달했음을 밝히며, 문화회관은 이러한 특별 기금에 깊이 감사하며 가치 있는 프로젝트와 활동을 계속 연구하고 개발할 것이라고 하며 감사패를 전달했다. 이어 김윤태 회장은 400석 규모의 비스코 홀이 2023년 12월 말 완공을 목표로 새로운 미래를 향한 도약으로 그 자부심을 키워나갈 것임을 밝혔다.

축하공연으로는 이번 행사를 위해 결성된 ‘프로젝트 ‘국악 앙상블’ (박원정, 박주미, 이경재, 양선우, 김덕환, 정우성)이 국악기와 서양 악기의 어울림, 판소리 음악가와 테너 성악가의 조화로운 공연을 선보여 큰 호응을 받았다.

이어 최기화 사무총장은 2023년 연중 기획 및 프로그램과 행사에 대한 계획을 발표하면서 시카고 역사박물관과의 ‘시카고 한인 이민 역사’에 대한 특별전시, Art Institute of Chicago와의 ‘현대 세라믹 특별전시’를 준비중임을 밝혔다.
