On Saturday, September 18, the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago held a Korean national holiday ‘Hangawi’ event, where more than 120 pre-registered attendees, including, the next generation Koreans, families of local community, and adoptive families enjoyed the Korean holiday culture. The event was promoted through the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s Journey Through Chicago campaign, and DuPage College’s Korean Professor attended with students as well.

Event started with a video of a folk tale showing our Chuseok culture in an easy-to-understand storytelling. Then attendees were given a demonstration of Charye and its proper ways of honoring our ancestors as well as hands-on experience where attendees had the opportunity to participate in the Charye service. Next, there were stations to make Songpyeon rice cake, traditional kites, and masks which then everyone followed the celebration performance by the KCCoC Poongmul that lead them to the Cultural Center Park to learn Yut Nori and Ganggangsullae dance.

Due to Covid-19, food was not available to share, but pre-packaged snacks of traditional K-food were given to everyone as a gift. For the winning team from the game of Yut, a variety of K-food products were given as prize and the tradition of generous Chuseok was felt by everyone.

 

시카고한인문화회관은 9월 18일 토요일에 민속 대명절 ‘한가위’ 행사를 열어, 사전 등록한 한인 차세대, 타인종, 입양가족 등120여명과 함께 한국 명절 문화를 즐기는 시간을 가졌다. 이번 행사는 Chicago Cultural Alliance의 ‘Journey through Chicago’ 캠페인을 통해 많은 홍보가 되었고, DuPage College의 한국어반 교수님들이 학생들과 함께 참석은 물론, 한국 입양인 가정들의 많은 참여가 눈에 띄었다.

행사는 우리의 추석 문화를 알기 쉽게 보여주는 동화 영상 감상 후에, 차례 지내기 시연을 통해 차례 지내는 바른 방법을 배워보고, 즉석에서 행사참가자들은 차례 지내기 체험도 해보았다. 이어 송편만들기와 전통 연, 탈 만들기를 하고, 문화회관 풍물단의 길놀이를 시작으로 문화회관 공원으로 자리를 옮겨 윷놀이와 강강술래를 배워보며 흥겨운 시간을 가졌다.

Covid-19 팬데믹의 여파로 추석 음식을 함께 나누지 못함을 대신해 전통 음식으로 구성된 간식을 답례품으로 준비하고, 윷놀이에서 이긴 팀에게는 한식 관련 상품이 주어져 풍성한 전통 명절 추석을 함께 느낄 수 있었던 시간이 되었다.
