Dol Hareubang Celebration 돌하루방 증정식이 7월 24 오후 4시에 있습니다, 많이 참석하시기 바랍니다.
This past July 10th, pairs of jeong ju suks, seok deungs (stone lantern), and dol hareubangs (famous stone statues from Jeju Island) were donated to the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago by Pastor Lee Heung Jong. Dol hareubangs are considered to be gods that offer protection and fertility. They protect against demons traveling between realities and are typically placed outside of gates. These rock statues are found on Jeju Island and are made from basalt, a volcanic rock.
This is the first time a set of dol harebang has been on display anywhere in the United States. We will be commemorating this donation from Pastor Lee Heung Jong with a ceremony and reception.

이흥종 목사님께서 우리문화를 널리 공유하기를 원하셔서 목사님께서 소유하셨던 돌하루방 두점, 정주석 두개, 석등 세점을 7월 10일 한인문화회관에 기증해 주셨습니다.
제주도에서 만들어진 돌하루방을 한인문화회관에 기증하므로 우리문화를 미국에 알릴 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 또 부산정을 중심으로 하여 한국 정원이 조성되어 여러가지 야외 문화행사를 할 수 있는 청사진을 마련할 수 있었습니다. 돌하루방은 조선 후기 장승 문화에서 영향을 받아 제주도 마을의 수호신 기능을 하였고 다듬기 쉬운 용암석을 이용하여 제주도만의 독특한 돌하루방문화를 만들어 냈습니다.
정주석은 집 입구에 세워 그 안에 사람이 있고 없음을 알리는 표시로서의 기능을 하였고 우마등이 들어 오지 못하게 하는 역할도 하였습니다.
돌하루방 증정식을 7월 24(일요일) 오후 4시에 제주도민회가 주최를 하여 문회회관의 부산정을 중심으로 한 야외마당에서 할 예정입니다.
