A ceremony to mark the ninth anniversary of the opening of the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago and the departure of its chairman was held on June 30 with 190 people gathered at the center. The ceremony opened with a celebratory performance of Chicago Cultural Center Pungmul School and then starting with the president, “Yoon-tae Kim’s welcoming speech, “Sung-bae Lee,” chairman of the Korean American Association in Chicago, and congratulatory remarks by Mayor Patrick Hawker. “Angela Oh,” a lawyer working in California, gave lectures under the theme of “Emergence, Co-creation, and Transcendence.” Then, a celebratory performance by male members of the Korean Cultural Center’s choir was highly acclaimed. Finally, Ki-nam Jang, former chairman of the Cultural Center, had a meeting with the group after finishing his term, and Sang Lim Moon announced his ambition to work for the new center. Celebrating its 9th anniversary, the Cultural Center will strive for more active cultural performances, exhibitions and cultural lectures for ethnic Koreans living in U.S., and it is time to strengthen its resolve to promote cultural exchanges between Korea and the United States and play a bridge in the mainstream American society.

시카고 한인 문화회관의 개관 9주년 기념 및 이사장 이취임식이 6월 30일 문화회관에서 190여명이 모인 가운데 열렸다. 김호정 씨의 사회로 진행된 기념식은 시카고 문화회관풍물 학교의 축하공연으로 막을 열었다. 그리고 ‘김윤태’ 회장의 환영사를 시작으로, ‘이성배’ 시카고 한인회 회장, ‘패트릭 호커’ 윌링 시장의 축사가 이어졌고 캘리포니아에서 활동하고 있는 ‘안젤라 오’ 변호사는 “Emergence, Co-creation, and Transcendence” 주제로 강연을 했다. 이어 한인문화회관 합창단의 남성 단원들의 축하 공연도 큰 호평을 받았다. 마지막으로 장기남 전 문화회관 이사장은 임기를 마치고 그간의 소회를 나누었으며 이어서 임문상 이사장이 새롭게 문화회관을 위해 일하게 된 포부를 발표했다. 문화회관은 9주년을 맞이하여 한인동포들을 위해 더욱 활발한 문화공연, 전시, 교양강좌등에 힘쓸 것이며 한미간의 문화교류 증진과 미 주류 사회에 교량 역할을 해 나가겠다는 결의를 다지는 시간이 되었다.
